As learning and development professionals, we're often familiar with DEI initiatives as corporate programs. However, it's crucial to recognize that DEI principles should extend beyond company-wide policies and into our classrooms, whether in-person or virtual. By integrating DEI into our teaching practices, we can create more inclusive and effective learning environments.
In this month's learning event, three presenters will address key ways in which we can integrate DEI into Learning and Development.

Incorporating DEIB in the Workplace

It's not enough for OC-based Ingram Micro to say they value diversity and inclusion. They strive to show their commitment every day, with DEIB built into their DNA.  It starts with their hiring practices, which are designed to attract diverse candidates and prioritize inclusivity from day one. It is sustained via robust Learning and Development (L&D) initiatives, such as the "Hire Great 3.0" unconscious bias training, the "I Am Impact" course, and the "Inside DEIB" video series, have set a high standard in the industry.

We're thrilled to welcome Dr. Ashley Goodwin-Lowe, Ingram Micro's DEI Lead Advisor and author of the book: "Belonging is Good for Business."

In her presentation, she'll discuss:

  • The unique contributions L&D brought to Ingram Micro's DEIB initiatives
  • Challenges and successes in integrating DEIB practices into L&D curricula
  • Advice to offer organizations following a similar path

The Importance of #a11y-ship

People with disabilities can be considered the largest minority within the workforce, and those numbers are constantly changing due to the very nature of disability.  Accessibility Advocate Alan Natachu will share practical tips for inclusive design or accessibility and discussing how these strategies not only enhance the learning experience for individuals with disabilities but also benefit all learners.

Walking the Talk

At ATD-Orange County, we are walking the talk by following a game plan published by our parent organization, ATD National.  National Advisory Council member Gwen Navarrete Klapperich will cap our event by giving us a tour of ATD's DEI Toolkit and the key practices it outlines for Chapters to incorporate DEI throughout chapter operations.  We'll show how we're "walking the talk," and invite further discussion about how we can ensure our Chapter is inclusive towards anyone who joins.
